Karim Benzema will win Ballon d’Or ‘if … Robert Lewandowski

Despite being in good form, Robert Lewandowski reckons he’s lost out on the Ballon d’Or to rival forward Benzema in the hunt for the award handed to the best male footballer in the world.

The Frenchman will definitely be up there in the rankings after an unforgettable year with Real Madrid, dominating La Liga and beating Liverpool to the Champions League.

As the ceremony draws closer, with it being held on October 17 in Paris, Lewandowski took a pop at bookies favourite Benzema in a recent interview after being asked about how he missed out on the glamorous award back in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic which halted sport across the world.

In an interview with Vamos, he conceded he most likely won’t be walking home with the trophy but managed to get a sly joke in. He said: “The Ballon d’Or is likely to be won by Benzema… if they don’t cancel it.”

The pair are set to come face-to-face the day before the award winner is revealed, with El Clasico being held at the Bernabeu in what will be a tasty affair as the Catalan giants look to lay their mark in their pursuit of knocking Real Madrid off their perch as the Spanish powerhouse after a number of successful years.

Benzema will be licking his lips at the thought of beating fierce rivals Barcelona and walking away with the golden football-shaped trophy in the space of just over 24 hours, with him failing to win the esteemed award after living in the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo for so many years.

Benzema would be the first Frenchman to walk away with the trophy since Zinedine Zidane in 1998 after the striker finished fourth last year, the closest he’s ever got to winning during his impressive career.
