Antonio Conte expressed satisfaction with Billy Gilmour’s first start for Napoli in their 5-0 Coppa Italia win over Palermo, but said he wasn’t surprised by the Scotland international’s performance.
Gilmour, who joined from Brighton, played the full 90 minutes, while fellow Scot Scott McTominay came on as a second-half substitute and scored his first goal for Napoli.
Conte emphasized his intent to rotate the squad, explaining how he made decisions to involve different players in their collective project. “We are working a lot on every aspect,” Conte noted in a press conference.
Despite a minimized team setup, he was pleased with the overall performance, specifying that players like Gilmour and others have shown significant promise.
He remarked, “I know him well from my experience in England. We strongly wanted him because he has determined skill sets. He is a strong player, like the other new players.”
Conte stressed the importance of each squad member, saying he dislikes the term “reserves” and believes every player in the group is capable of contributing.
Looking ahead to their next Serie A match against Monza, Conte stated, “We’ll face difficulties, so we must be good and make sure that we focus on Monza starting tomorrow.”
