France has replaced Christopher Nkunku with Eintracht Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani in their World Cup squad after the latter was forced to withdraw due to injury.
The 23-year-old will now join up with Didier Deschamps’ team ahead of their World Cup campaign, which begins in one week.
Nkunku limped off during France’s training session in Clairefontaine after sustaining an injury to his left knee.
In a video shared by RMC Sport, Nkunku, 25, was on the receiving end of a late challenge from Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga and was seen immediately clutching the back of his left leg, looking in discomfort. He was then assisted off the pitch.
France later confirmed that Nkunku had been forced to withdraw from the squad.
Kolo Muani, 23, has emerged as one of Frankfurt’s star players this season after netting eight goals and assisting 11 times in 23 appearances this season.
Nkunku has been in fine form himself RB Leipzig, scoring 17 goals and assisting four times during 23 appearances in all competitions for the German side.
News of Nkunku’s injury is a blow for France, who have already lost defender Presnel Kimpembe this week.
Kimpembe returned to action for Paris Saint-Germain over the weekend, coming off the bench for the last 15 minutes of their 5-0 victory over Auxerre on Sunday.
But the defender has now been ruled out of the World Cup after failing to recover from a hamstring injury, with Monaco centre-back Axel Disasi being called-up as his replacement.
France begin their World Cup campaign against Australia on November 22.
