Fifa President Gianni Infantino re-elected unopposed

On Thursday at 73rd Congress of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) in Kigali, Rwanda, Gianni Infantino was re-elected as president having been the only candidate nominated unopposed.

Despite the prevalence of allegations and accusations made against him including questions on Qatar’s human rights record prior to the hosting of last year’s World Cup and his plans to host the tournament biennially, Infantino nonetheless promised a new cycle period that will bring in an estimated 11 billion dollars.

This is following already a history of success for him with revenues reaching 7.5 billion USD (to 2022) despite being impacted by Covid-19, and FIFA reserves having grown from around $1 billion to almost 4 billion USD.

Along with discussing considered solutions such as revisiting the transfer system and potentially introducing caps on salaries, Infantino specifically mentioned expanding FIFA’s men’s and women’s tournaments as well as introducing a 32 team club world cup in further efforts to popularise global football community engagement.

This current victory marks GianniInfantino’s second term and he stipulated that he will be available for a third and final candidacy in four years’ time.
