Former Barcelona director of youth academy Albert Benaiges has been accused of child sex abuses, according to Spanish and Catalan media report.

Reports in the Catalan newspaper, Ara, claims the allegations against Benaiges date back to the 1980s and 90s when he worked as a Physical Education (PE) teacher in Les Corts district of the city.

A former student of the academy has made a formal statement to the police, and more are expected to follow in the coming days.

While the 71 year old has denied all the allegations, the paper reported that there have been no allegations made by former players at the Barcelona academy where he worked from 1992 to 2011.

Among the allegations levelled against him are claims that he exposed himself to students at the school, touched the student, made them undress in front of classmates and that he showed them pornographic videos.

Benaiges while speaking to Ara said: “I have never hurt anyone and if I have done it hasn’t been internationally. My conscience is very clear, I have never forced anybody and I have denounced paedophiles.”

While the former academy director has denied the allegations, Catalonia Minister for Education Josep Gonzalez announced on Saturday that an official department have been open to investigate into the alleged abuses and pledged to support all those that come forward.

While Albert Benaiges was at La Masia he oversaw the development of Barcelona’s golden generation, bringing the likes of Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi through to the Blaugrana first team.
