Eguavoen Explains Why He Snub Cyriel Dessers In Nigeria’s AFCON Squad

Super Eagles interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has explain his decision behind dropping Feyenoord forward Cyriel Dessers from the Nigeria’s AFCON squad.

The Nigeria Football Federation handed a late call up to Slavia Prague’s Peter Olayinka and Olympiakos’s Henry Onyekuru after Dennis and Osimhen withdrew from the 28 man squad, due to injury and their refusal from their clubs.

With the Belgian born not listed in Gernot Rohr’s 40 man provisional squad for the tournament in Cameroon, it was easy for Eguavoen not to include him in the initial 28 man squad.

The former Heracles Amelo striker has been enjoying his football since joining the Eredivisie giants Feyenoord, scoring nine goals in 21 games from the bench.

Eguavoen in an interview with the media said: “I have watched Olayinka in Champions League game against Inter, I haven’t watched Dessers closely so because of the time factor that’s why I decided to stick to people that I know.”

“Onyekuru he came in because Dennis is out and Onyekuru has always been around with the team, Dennis has not always been around the team.”

“Olayinka was named in the 40 man list and I didn’t want to go outside the list.”

However, as it stands Dessers may be a potential invite for the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, should Al Shabab fails to release Odion Ighalo ahead of the tournament.
