NFF Announce Inclusion of Two New Players in Super Eagles Squad

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has revealed the addition of two new players to the Super Eagles squad for their upcoming friendly matches in March.

Gabriel Osho, a defender based in England, and Benjamin Tianimu, who plays in Tanzania, have been called up to join the team for the first time.

The friendly matches will see Nigeria face off against Ghana’s Black Stars and Mali’s Les Aigles in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

These matches have been organized by Jairo Pachon of Eurodata Sport, the NFF’s FIFA Match Agent.

The clash with Ghana’s Black Stars on March 22 holds historical significance, as it revives a 73-year rivalry between the two West African giants.

The rivalry dates back to October 1951 when Nigeria defeated then Gold Coast 5-0 in a Jalco Cup encounter in Lagos.

In their most recent meeting in March 2022, the two teams competed in a two-legged play-off for a spot in the FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar, with the Black Stars advancing on the away-goal rule after a 1-1 aggregate.

Nigeria and Mali, both known as the ‘Eagles’, last faced each other in a friendly match in Rouen, France, in 2016, which ended in a goalless draw.

Prior to that, in the semi-finals of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, the Malian Eagles suffered a 1-4 defeat to the eventual winners, the Super Eagles, in Durban.

The Nigeria-Ghana match will take place at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on March 22 at 4 p.m. Morocco time, while the Nigeria-Mali encounter will kick off at the same venue on March 26 at 9 p.m.

According to Ademola Olajire, the NFF’s Director of Communications, Nigeria has retained the majority of the squad that finished as runners-up at the 34th Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
